Used BMW 8 Series FAQs

  • How do the BMW 8 Series engines perform?

The powertrain options for the BMW 8 include a 316 bhp 3.0-litre diesel badged as the 840d and 3 different petrol options. The 840d records 4.9 seconds to reach 62 mph from rest, while the similarly powered entry-level 3.0-litre 840i petrol takes 5.0 seconds. The other 2 petrol units are 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8s tuned to 523 bhp and 616 bhp, which come in the M850i and the M8 Competition trim, respectively, timing acceleration from 0-62 mph in 3.2s and 3.7s, in that order.

  • What's the difference between the BMW 8 Series M850i and the M8 Competition?

The 2 top-tier trims have the same exterior looks and interior detailing but are significantly different under the bonnet. Since the M8 Competition packs an upgraded version of the M850i engine, it gets an upgraded oil supply, an improved cooling system and a high-pressure injection system to match. The M8 Competition's engine outputs more power, making it quicker than the M850i, even though it produces the same 750 Nm of torque. The M8 Competition has the option to send all power to the rear wheels only.

  • Is the BMW 8 Series an exciting ride?

The 20-inch alloy wheels offer excellent grip on the tarmac, which comes in handy when you want to test the performance limits of this model. You can also select from Comfort, Sport and Sport+ driving modes. Each mode reveals a different aspect of the BMW 8 Series. For example, the GT rides softer in Comfort mode, while Sport mode increases the throttle responses and feeds fake engine thrums into the cabin for extra excitement.

  • Is the BMW 8 Series a practical tourer?

The driver and front passenger get sufficient legroom and headroom, but the back seats are a tight squeeze as it has a sloping roofline that takes up a large chunk of the rear headroom. As such, the back is more suited for kids than adults. The 8 Series is practical in terms of luggage space, you get a 420-litre boot space, which is more than most family hatchbacks. Also, the 50:50 split rear seats can fold down to open up more space when needed. If you go for the 4-door Gran Coupe, you get an extra 20 litres of cargo room.

  • Is the BMW 8 Series a safe ride?

The Euro NCAP has never crash-tested the BMW 8 Series, but that doesn't imply it's unsafe. As the 8 Series is a flagship model, BMW certainly didn't cut corners. It comes with almost every safety kit you can think of, including multiple cameras and several sensors to provide drivers with an all-around view of the car's surroundings. Some of the other safety features include active cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assistance and a head-up display that keeps your eyes on the road.

About the BMW 8 Series

The BMW 8 series is a luxurious 4-seat grand tourer with an eye-catching exterior, a beautifully finished interior and a generous collection of high-tech features. Its interior detailing is similar to the highly refined Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe, and it promises the same sporty capability as the Mercedes-AMG GT. The BMW 8 Series comes with superbly fast petrol engines and 1 punchy diesel motor, all paired with 4WD drivetrains. The 6-cylinder diesel speeds from 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds, while the top-of-the-range V8 petrol does the same in 3.2 seconds. The top speed across all versions is electronically limited to a maximum of 155 mph.

What should you expect to find in a BMW 8 Series?

The BMW 8 Series comes in 2 main trim levels: the M Sport and the M850i. There is also a performance-oriented limited-production 8 Series badged as the M8 Competition. All the main trims come available as either a 2-door couple, 4-door Gran Coupe or soft-top convertible. The entry-level M Sport range comes with:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Adaptive LED lights
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Electric-powered folding mirrors
  • Heated electrically adjustable sports seats

The top-of-the-line M850i is noticeably more powerful, thanks to the twin-turbo V8 petrol engine. It also gets a sports exhaust system, Active M-Sport Differential for better grip, and grey-painted door mirrors, vents and grilles. Besides these, it carries over the standard M Sport features, including:

  • Automatic headlights
  • Leather seats
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Reverse parking camera

Another significant upgrade in the high-end trims is the infotainment system. It comprises a 10.25-inch touchscreen display and a large 12.3-inch Live Cockpit digital instrument display on the dashboard. Both have a head-up display (HUD) that keeps essential driving info on the windscreen. You also get voice control, gesture control and Apple CarPlay. Despite all these futuristic features, the first-generation BMW 8 Series didn't debut with Android Auto as part of its tech kit.
